En el 2005 me invitaron a formar parte de este proyecto de CUNY TV: un programa de televisión para celebrar la existencia de un Nueva York en español. Durante más de un año he entrevistado escritores y artistas para hablar de su obra y de la vida de Nueva York en nuestra lengua. Soy solamente una parte del programa, y es para mí una dicha ser parte de él.

El programa en que colabora Carmen Boullosa ha recibido otros dos N.Y. EMMY
El programa Nueva York, que trata sobre las vidas de los latinos en esta ciudad y en el que colabora habitualmente la escritora mexicana, acaba de ser galardonado con un EMMY. Carmen Boullosa entrevista regularmente para este programa a escritores y artistas hispanohablantes que viven o no en Nueva York, y a neoyorkinos con una mirada interesante sobre la vida neoyorkina en español. Ha publicado en Ediciones Siruela los libros La otra mano de Lepanto, La virgen y el violín, El velázquez de París y El complot de los Románticos. Con este último, ganó el Premio de Novela Café Gijón 2008.


NUEVA YORK from CUNY TV wins the Emmy for Best Cultural Magazine show at the 52nd edition of the awards ceremony on Sunday, March 29th

NUEVA YORK is CUNY TV’s series in Spanish about the lives and cultures of Latinos in the cit, presented in Spanish with English subtitles

New York, April 2, 2009. Nueva York, which premiered in the fall of 2005, was recognized on Sunday, March 29th as the Best Cultural Magazine by the members of the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The 30 minute show transmitted by CUNY TV Canal 75 in New York City competed against three other local series, all produced in English. Nueva York, which is presented in Spanish with English subtitles, dedicates itself to exploring the rich and diverse threads in weave of Latin communities in the city.

CUNY Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson, Executive Producer of Nueva York and Robert Issacson, Executive Director of CUNY TV and Senior Producer of the series, were present to receive the prize. In his brief acceptance speech, Hershenson noted that it was a great honor for The City University of New York to create and present the series because “Latinos and Latinas are the present and future of the city.” He thanked all of the producers of Nueva York for their dedication to the production of the series. This was the second consecutive years in which Nueva York was nominated for Best Cultural Magazine. The awards ceremony, which drew large attendance from important figures in the media, also awarded announcer and journalist Katie Couric.

In each episode Nueva York visits leaders from public and cultural spheres of the Tri-State area. They share with the viewers their thoughts about their projects and communities. The episodes also present segments about events, exhibits, services, performances and institutions available to residents. Among the extensive list of those interviewed in the first four years of the series are: President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez; Judge Baltazar Garzon; the writers Laura Esquivel, Antonio Skarmetta, Laura Restrepo, Enrique Vila-Matas, Marcio Veloz; the community leaders Luis Barrios, Chegui Torres, Estela Carlotto, bishop Alvaro Ramazzini; the artists Miriam Colón, Omar Rayo, Ramona Hernandez; and the musicians Juanes, Manu Chao, Las Hermanas Marquez, and El Conjunto Folklórico y Experimental Nuevayorquino.

Beginning this season, Nueva York produces two episodes each month and telecast weekly on Thursday and Sunday. Nueva York is hosted by the Mexican novelist and critic Carmen Boullosa and by the Chilean writer and journalisty Patricio Lerzundi. The Senior Producer is Profesor Jerry Carlson, a scholar of Latin American film and culture. The three are members of the City University of New York faculty. The series is produced by bilingual professionals from Colombia, Guatemala, Massachusetts, México, Spain, Texas, and the Domincan Republic.
